Single-Digit Cold Hits Area

Winter temperatures are finally here, and area residents say it feels extreme because of the unusually balmy weather experienced at the end of 2015.

But single digits are not unheard of in early January, and more cold temperatures are expected. Some elderly people walking home from Stop and Shop in the center of Washingtonville reminded each other to stay inside if the temperature goes below 15 degrees, and to leave faucets trickling on single-digit over nights to keep their pipes from freezing. The National Weather Service urges the elderly, whose bodies cannot readily regulate temperature, to avoid prolonged exposure outdoors, wear hats and gloves if they must go out, and adequately heat their homes to 68 degrees, or above.
