A 35-year-old man with ties to the Newburgh and Middletown areas was killed after being hit by an alleged drunk driver on Route 17K near Target this week.
The man, whom police say last listed his address as the City of Newburgh, was crossing the street at the time of the accident, which occurred at about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday night. There are no crosswalks in the area, which is near a bus terminal.
“It’s not a high pedestrian area,” Deputy Chief Donald B. Campbell said. “It appears that the victim was struck in the center of the roadway near the double-yellow lines.”
The man, whose name was being withheld Thursday afternoon until his family was notified, was struck by a 2012 Toyota RAV 4 driven by Donna Harrison, 77, of New Windsor, police said. Harrison was charged with driving while intoxicated and vehicular manslaughter.
Harrison was arraigned in Newburgh Town Court and released on $5,000 bail.
Police were awaiting the results of an accident reconstruction to find out more about the incident, Campbell said.
