Support Our Heroes Receives Extra $200 Donation from VFW Post #1161
By James R. Formato and Lucy Mercado
The foundation Support Our Heroes just received a donation from the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1161 in Newburgh. The mission of this non-profit organization is to provide ‘care’ packages to service members overseas.” She began this venture in 2004 when her son, Louis Jr. was stationed with the Marines in Iraq.
Louis Jr. saw two tours of duty there and after eight years decided he wanted to pursue other interests. However, Lucy has continued sending packages even though her son is no longer in the service.
Apparently, Lucy is the “Guardian Angel” for these troops because without her efforts they would not get any of these items. She says she feels exhausted at times since she personally needs to reach out to people and doing fundraisers just to keep the foundation afloat. She receives no assistance from any major organization or corporation. Her determination and compassion for doing this constantly throughout the year is readily observed when she speaks of the needs of the troops. The VFW Post 1161 heard about her work and decided to make her foundation one of their permanent yearly recipients. Post Chaplain Michael Lutz said he felt the VFW donation would help defray some of the cost for shipping.
Mrs. Mercado added “My son’s platoon consisted of over 300 men and women, and not everyone had a loved one to receive care packages from. I started the foundation with the intent that it would only be for a couple of years, if that long. Here I am 13 years later, reaching out to people and doing fund raisers trying to keep the foundation afloat.
Presently I have 3 platoons overseas, 2 of which are from New Windsor, NY. They had casualties the very first month they arrived overseas. The public has little knowledge of the men and women we are losing.
My purpose is to remind everyone not to forget them. They need our support, help and motivation. Show them, they are not forgotten and always appreciated.
