Newburgh Christmas Tree Lighting
City of Newburgh’s Christmas Tree Lighting was attended by a big crowd on Broadway who joined in a countdown and clapped and cheered loudly as the many multi-colored bulbs lit up, while a very jovial Santa Clause stood in front celebrating with both children and adults who braved a cold and drizzly evening and were warmed by hot chocolate served by the Salvation Army and lots of holiday companionship.
Photo above shows the Berben Family which donated the tree. Kerilee Berben is a Washingtonville Taft Elementary School second grade teacher.
The tree was originally planted by the Shiaramonte family back in the late 60’s and daughter Genevieve Shramek said “They always liked it and would be as proud and honored as the rest of the family is that it was chosen as the City’s Christmas Tree”.
After the holidays the wood from this tree will be used by Habitat for Humanity to renovate homes for Newburgh families in need.
