The Week In Review-The Weekend Ahead

UPDATE: Newburgh Police Chief Search To Start Over

By Edie Johnson

One after another blockade has been put in front of Newburgh’s search for a new Police Chief.

From retirement to disqualifications due to residency requirements, it has been a long haul. Just when the City thought they had solved the extended vacancy by selecting an already experienced police chief willing to move from Beacon to the City of Newburgh, they were notified this week that the State of New York will not accept Doug Solomon’s existing certification, because the Civil Service certification requirements in Orange County have different  requirements.

City Manager, Michael Ciaravino told the Orange County Post late on Wednesday that:

“On behalf of the residents of the City of Newburgh, this is very disappointing news. Chief Solomon was eager to begin the work here, and we were excited o have a leader  of his stature and extensive experience enhance our already impressive leadership in the NPD. I’m certainly glad I asked civil service before making the appointment.” Next steps: “Back to the drawing board. There is no time frame other than as
quickly as possible.”
