W’ville Students Say “Enough Violence”

Open Letter to WHS Principal Connolly on the Student Walkout
Dear Mr. Connolly,
I wanted to take this opportunity to publicly thank you, and everyone else, who made the events of Mar. 14 such a beautiful and moving ceremony at Washingtonville High School. Our students were so respectful, while they came together to remember those lost last month in the Florida school shooting.
The three students who spoke, Ryan Waaland, Nate McIntyre, and Maya Diaz, were incredible in the way they honored all those fallen with something personal about each person. They spoke about coming together, not losing hope, and reminded everyone of the cards and letters available to send to our local politicians. The music was incredible. I literally have no words to explain how proud I was of every student who participated (and their parents too). They will remember yesterday as a day they took a stand to make the world a better place.
I have sent thank you cards to both the Washingtonville and Blooming Grove Police Departments who came out to ensure our student’s safety, and asked that Mayor Joe Bucco please convey my thanks to Washingtonville PD Chief Brian Zaccaro as well. The security was outstanding and it was very clear that it was huge team effort between law enforcement and our school district’s administrators and security people.
I thank our teaching staff who went the extra mile to help our students’ voices be heard.
In closing, they rocked my world on Mar. 14. Amazing! Go Wizards!
Sincerely,
Colleen Doyle
