Washingtonville Teen Wins NYS Weightlifting Competition
Johnny Poveromo an 18 year old, 2017 Washingtonville High Graduate & former Washingtonville offensive lineman was the overall champion – teenage division – at the New York State sanctioned “Revolution” Powerlifting Competition held at Hofstra University in Hempstead NY on March 17th.
He was crowned the overall champion in the 18/19year old division. Which measured your overall pounds lifted in three separate events (Squat / Dead Lift & Bench Lift disciplines).
Johnny’s performance for an 18 year old was off the charts as his Bench Lift was 315 pounds (NYS Teenage State Record) his Squat was 555 pounds a (NYS State Record for Teenagers) and his winning lift was a Dead Lift of 575 pounds.
Johnny’s overall pounds lifted finished at 1,470 pounds for the competition which catapulted him into first place. The judges were impressed with Johnny’s final results as entry into the “professional” weightlifting category requires a minimal overall “lift” of 1500 pounds and Johnny as a 18 year old finished the competition a 1470 (30 pounds short of weightlifting professional classification!!)
Johnny currently trains at Gold’s Gym in Newburgh and HURT Fitness in Washingtonville – he is a freshman in college and a volunteer fireman at Monell Fire Dept. in Washingtonville.
