An Ogre of a Play!
By Eugenia Moskowitz
The Washingtonville Middle School drama club broke its collective leg again with its production of “Shrek Jr.” last weekend, starring Lucas Kaufman, Max Ossentjuk, Charlotte Wall, Jack Lombardo, and Aryanna WongSing. Directed by English and drama teacher Heidi Leonard, with assistance from Diana Dubs, the script and lyrics (based on the 2001 Dreamworks film which itself stemmed from a 1990 children’s book by William Steig) came alive as the middle school fairytale misfits took the audience along on their adventure to rescue a princess and find true acceptance. The play’s powerful message was delivered with laughter and an array of fabulous songs performed by the talented cast, while the set designs, executed by the clever and creative crew, forwarded the impact. The costuming, especially of Lord Farquaad and the Dragon, was inventive and stunning. And a particularly nice touch was the bittersweet passage of time described in one moment of “now”as the three Fionas sang simultaneously. With musical direction by Ingrid Narkin and technical wizardry by Jack Hartford, the show was spectacular in bringing to the fore the abilities of the student-actors, especially those who look forward to joining the high school drama club as they enter ninth grade.
