Washingtonville’s “Alex’s Lemonade Stand” hits 10 Year Mark

By Eugenia Moskowitz

It’s been 10 years since Washingtonville’s Abby Peterson took her 4-year old daughter’s hand and set up their first Alex’s Lemonade Stand outside the Moffat Library. Charlotte and her little brother Jerry were very small then, but the tradition in the family had been set, and every year since, Abby and her children have set up the lemonade stand to benefit cancer research, and each year the enterprise has grown.

From the first days when Abby handled everything and the children poured the lemonade, to now, when Charlotte (a rising ninth grader) takes control of more of the financials and abstract record-keeping and Jerry (a rising seventh grader) handles more of the organizing of the baskets and donations, the mission of the lemonade stand remains the same: to help fund pediatric cancer research in memory of a special little girl who had started her own lemonade stand many years ago before she passed away.

This year was the first time since the flood of 2011 that the stand was able to come back to the historic Moffat Library building from its previous temporary location on Route 208 and Sarah Wells Trail, which local environmental engineering company Advance Testing had graciously lent to the library.

Abby Peterson said, “The generosity in our town is truly awesome. There were tons of people that just walked up to donate $20 and asked for nothing in return. Some had stories of cancer that have touched their loved ones. That always gets me. It’s a rewarding day for all.” She added, “Our donations since 2010 have helped to fund 211 hours of research, and we’ve helped to raise $10,554 since 2010. Last Sunday alone we raised $1069.31.”

Along with the Peterson family, Isabella and Vinny Sabatino and Morgan and Jackson Bunning helped to serve lemonade and treats, manage the raffles, and help set up and break down the stand at the end of the day. There was also face painting by Athena Aldoroty and a craft inside the library’s community room.
