We Are Newburgh” Celebrates Annual Back to School BBQ At Downing Park
“We R Newburgh” made the best of a beautiful day at Downing Park, with music, a BBQ, dancing, and free backpacks for children about ready to go back to school. We Are Newburgh was started 6 years ago by Joe Alvarez who grew up in poverty in the City of Newburgh, and after a troublesome childhood decided he was going to do something to improve living conditions in the City. He formed We Are Newburgh to mobilize like-minded individuals to step up and do something to help their community and to shine a light on the beautiful people of Newburgh who are too often associated with some of the challenges the community faces. This year marked the 5th annual Back To School BBQ for We Are Newburgh, comprised of dedicated volunteers and organizations and businesses who donate goods and services to support its efforts at improving living conditions. They are grateful to The United Way of Dutchess and Orange Region for sponsoring the event and Fidelis Healthcare who have supported their efforts through donations of book bags and school supplies, as well as appreciation to the Newburgh Enlarged City School District who partnered with We Are Newburgh and donated about 450 book bags and school supplies toward the effort.
Candidate for Assemly, Kevindaryan Lujan , attending the event, said “This is what unity in our community looks like. I could not be more proud of our city than I am in this moment. Seeing all the volunteers, families, kids and vendors that made this possible is truly amazing. this is the real Newburgh, a city that embraces diversity and is centered on dedication and love for our community.”
