Cardinal Dolan Visits St. Mary’s New Church Building in Washingtonville
By Eugenia Moskowitz
Archbishop Timothy Cardinal Dolan of New York visited Washingtonville on Sept. 7 as part of a conglomeration of festivities all rolled into one evening at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, as the church celebrated its new building dedication, which will house offices and religious education classes among other services. Also included in this expansion was a renovation of the inside of Fr. Tetreau Hall, which is now connected to the new building.
The 60th jubilee of Sr. Kathleen Treanor, who works in the religious education department, was also celebrated as she renewed her vows.
To feed the masses, which numbered over 750, the church’s annual Pig Roast was also held, including grilled hot dogs and hamburgers, corn on the cob, salads, beverages, pulled pork, cracklins, and a whole roast beast. Children enjoyed the three bouncy houses and a fierce game of gaga-ball as people lined up and the food was served by the Catholic Daughters and the Knights of Columbus, who organized the entire event. The St. Mary’s Horizons Youth Group members also played a vital role in managing the evening and supervising the younger children.
At some of the center of attention, starting at 7:00 p.m., was Cardinal Dolan himself, who entered the packed church and greeted people with humor and grace. Affable with adults and children alike, he delivered the service to the congregation, helped Sr. Kathleen renew her vows, and then joined everyone as they retired to the parking lot to enjoy food and good company as the sun set over the treetops.
The church’s annual Pig Roast, held in September of each year, is always open to the general public and is free.
