Are Smart Meters Smart or Dangerous
By Edie Johnson
Deborah Kopald, an Orange County advocate for environmental safety, filed suit in Albany this week against the Public Service Commission and Orange and Rockland Utilities regarding the health and safety risks of the growing number of smart meter uses. Some say they are safe, especially as compared to cell phone and other wireless electronic usage, but others warn that there are separate meters for each utility, and when considered with the other growing wireless devices are increasingly threatening us with increased radiation.
Smart meters emit radio frequency radiation (RFR) in order to be able to communicate wirelessly between the user and home company. The concern is that our bodies absorb the radiation. Some research studies have shown that RFR’s affect birds and other animals in the area as well.
Kopald’s suit includes 14 Exhibits, with the basis of the main petition asking the court to “Annul, vacate and void the portion of the November 17, 2017 order of the New York Public Service that denies rehearing of the November 17, 2017 order of the PSC that ordered the further implementation of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (“AMI”) throughout Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc.’s (“O&R”) entire service territory.”
