Dog Park Coming to Washingtonville/Board of Ed Meeting Notice
By Eugenia Moskowitz
The much-anticipated dog park is coming to Washingtonville, to be located at Vern Allen Park at the corner of Route 94 and Ahern Blvd. The dog run will be situated deeper inside of Vern Allen in a grassy area surrounded by trees (away from the children’s playground) and will include two runs, a larger one of 8,070 square feet and a smaller one of 3,000 square feet. The fencing will be put up this fall, but unfortunately not in time for the inaugural Woofingtonville Dog Parade to be held on Nov. 3 from 11:00am to 2:00pm at Vern Allen. This pooch parade, brainstormed and organized by village resident Sandra Heintz, welcomes all furry four-legged pals and dog lovers.
In other news:
The annual Walk for Our Heroes and First Responder Picnic, organized by a group of girl scouts and girl scout leaders from Washingtonville partnering with Mayor Joe Bucco and the Village of Washingtonville, will be held on Oct. 6 (rain date Oct. 7). The Walk will take place from 10-12, and will honor the memory of State Police officer Charles R. Salaway, who participated in the search and rescue/recovery efforts after the September 11 attacks, and succumbed recently to cancer from those efforts. He leaves behind a wife and five children, and all proceeds from the Walk will go to his family. The Walk will start at Memorial Park on Ahern and continue to Vern Allen, where the Picnic will take place from 12 to 3:30. All police, fire, and EMS personnel are welcome to come celebrate everything they do for the community, and to enjoy food and beverages.
Mayor Bucco discussed the village’s storm water management program which is in progress. Trustee Val Laudato met with the DEC and a report will be forthcoming on how the village can best manage its storm water. Trustee Rich Calore said that the DEC had said they were shocked nothing had been done to properly manage village storm water or catch basins for the past 10 years. The new board under Mayor Bucco is addressing this issue which, under past boards, the DEC said had apparently been neglected.
The Children’s Recreation Program has added a new hire to replace a retiring person. The new person, currently a Washingtonville school district substitute teacher, will be joining Diane Jansens in running the children’s rec program.
There was discussion to put an online community calendar designed by Trustee Laudato onto the village website. This would be one comprehensive calendar with village/town/school district events and meetings, so that residents can see what events are happening when to either attend them or to plan their own events. Dates and events can be added, however dates are also subject to change, and while the village can update their events easily, residents will have to check the school website for updates and snow cancellations for school meetings and events. More information on this will be coming soon.
All Village of Washingtonville meetings are videoed and put up on the village website for everyone to view to keep informed
