Washingtonville Ice Hockey Club Kicks Off 2018-2019 Season
Washingtonville, NY—It’s late October and the skate edges are cutting the ice at Ice Time Sports Complex, as the Washingtonville Ice Hockey Club Varsity and JV teams ramp up for their 2018-2019 season. After several weeks of team building and practice, the first puck dropped for both teams this past weekend.

WIHC’s JV team, lead by Head Coach Chris Deftereos and Assistants Steve Den Bleyker and Chris Roe, faced the Saugerties Mustangs at Kiwanis Ice Arena in Saugerties, NY, on Friday, October 19, 2018, falling 7-5 in a tense back-and-forth match. With 5 goals hitting the back of the net, only 3 Wizards sounded the buzzer: Daniel Hewitt (1), Mark Ferry (2), and John Rufrano (2).Goalie Ryan Whitchurch withstood 33 shots, saving 26.

WIHC’s Varsity team, lead by Head Coach Bob McGrath and Assistants Bob Eisenhauer and Jon Branch, went head-to-head against the Saugerties Mustangs at Ice Time Sports Complex in Newburgh, NY, on Sunday, October 21, 2018, for a 4-1 win in an energetic match. Players reaching the back of the net included Wizards Tyler Schwerdtfeger, Dean Soutar, Brendan McGrath, and Andrew Godfrey. Goalie Ryan Troy defied 27 shots, letting only one get by him.

JV Head Coach Chris Deftereoson his team’s first game: “I always get choked up watching our players take the ice—it gets to me every time! I feel nostalgic but most of all humbled and proud in being part of the game, surrounded by the team.”

Washingtonville Ice Hockey Club is part of the Hudson Valley High School Ice Hockey Association, consisting of high school teams from Orange and Dutchess County. Its declaration of purpose provides its members will endeavor to provide for all young men and women of the Washingtonville and a few other surrounding communities the format and opportunity to learn and play ice hockey at various age and skill levels. Charter and Articles for the club were proposed and adopted on May 26, 1994.
