The Week In Review-The Weekend Ahead

Double Murder on Liberty Street

Double Murder on Liberty Street

Just weeks after Newburgh lauded its impressive record of ‘no murders this year’, a shooting last Saturday night on Liberty Street just south of Gidney left two people, Alexis Comacho 25, and Antwaun Thomas 28, killed and a third person injured. A memorial of balloons, flowers, and candles grew in the small yard at the front of the building by Monday afternoon with Alexis’ name floating above. The shotspotter program helped police and EMS arrive within seconds to the scene, sadly unable to save the two lives.
Contact with friends of the victims uncovered a story of Antwaun Thomas’s recent efforts to turn his life around. Making serious efforts to improve his circumstances, he had enrolled in a new program to acquire film production skills. He was spoken of as being private at first, but that once he opened up he had a very warm heart. Friends said it was hoped that the program would be helping him on a new pathway, but that “sometimes the hood won’t set you free so easily”. Another said, “For Antwaun, there was no liberty on Liberty Street on Saturday night”.

The City had credited extensive efforts at intensive community relations training for officers, including one of the top training programs in the country in Texas for the recent lower crime rates. This year’s record, before Saturday night, had resulted in only 3 non-fatal incidents as compared to 47 per year just a few years back.

The homicide suspect has still not been caught as we go to press. Police are continuing to investigate the murders and ask that anyone with information call the City of Newburgh Police Department tip line at 845-561-3131
