Daniel I. Baldassare. Cpl. Baldassare was killed when his aircraft crashed and was a member of the local Marine Reserve Unit. The Marine Corps KC-130 transport plane that crashed July 10, 2017 in Mississippi, killing all 16 on board, included nine crew members from a Marine reserve unit based at the Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh. Fifteen Marines and a Navy corpsman were on board the tanker when it corkscrewed into theground about 85 miles north of Jackson, the state capital.

Sweet Peas Café is located on Route 94, in New Windsor, NY. The CWV has been active in not only Catholic affairs but also in community outreach. This has been the desire of the present post commander, Robert Schiela. He is extremely proud of the post’s community programs including assistance in the Town of New Windsor Baseball program, the purchase of flags for local elementary schools, donations to the Orange County Food Pantry, Hudson Valley Honor Flight, scholarships Sacred Heart School and NFA JR AFROTC, the participation of the post’s Honor Guard and Firing Squad at various ceremonies, and, of course, the assistance provided to veterans no matter their faith. Mrs. Baldassare commented that the bench will definitely serve as a reminder of her son’s desire to serve and to be the best he could. She stated currently the bench is inside the café among his other mementos, but when the weather is warmer she plans to put it outside for her customers to use. John and Nina thanked the CWV Post for their welcomed memorial gift and they both reiterated “God bless those who serve.”
