Nearly Halfway Through Season, the WIHC Varsity Wizards Continue Winning Streak

Newburgh, NY—The Washingtonville Ice Hockey Club hosted four games at Ice Time Sports Complex this past Veteran’s Day weekend. The Varsity Wizards continue to dominate the offensive zone and would come up two wins, making them a team to contend with, boasting a 6-1 record, losing only to the Arlington Admirals. A rematch is scheduled this Friday. The Varsity Wizards continue to keep the puck moving into the net week after week while the JV Wizards continue to build up momentum through aggressive teamwork.

WIHC’s Varsity: Lead by Head Coach Bob McGrath and Assistants Bob Eisenhauer and Jon Branch, went head-to-head against the Cornwall Dragons at Ice Time Sports Complex in Newburgh, NY,in Game 1 on Saturday coming up with a 5-1 win.With several outstanding plays, Wizards Andrew Godfrey, Tyler Schwerdtfeger, Dylan Eisenhauer, Devin Durante, and Jacob Branch would go onto score goals, supported by Goalie Troy Ryan in net.

In the game against the FDR Presidents at Ice Time, in Game 2on Sunday, their teamwork was no match for a tight game resulting in a 5-3 win. Dylan Eisenhauer and Jacob Branch would return to score along with Andrew Godfrey, William Connelly, and Devin Durante, supported by Goalie Ryan Whitchurch in net.

WIHC’s JV:Lead by Head Coach Chris Deftereos and Assistants Steve Den Bleyker and Chris Rohe, JV faced the Cornwall Dragons at Ice Time Sports Complex in Newburgh, NY,in Game 1 on Saturday, with a 9-4 win in a penalty intense match. Warwick Wizard Jack Vander Plaatskated away with a hat trickand John Rufrano would come up with multiple goals along with teammates Mark Ferry, Angelo Rosado III, and Zachary Den Bleyker, supported by Goalie Ricky Palmeri in net.

In the game against the FDR Presidents at Ice Time, in Game 2 on Sunday, these Wizards displayed immense teamwork and keen passing, playing hard with six men out the last three minutes of the third period due to Goalie Ryan Whitchurch’s injury. Despite picking up a 7-4 loss, Wizards Jack Vander Plaat and John Rufrano would return for goals, along with James Berry, supported by Goalie Ryan Whitchurch.

Parent Jeffrey Howe on having two players, one on Varsity and the other on JV: “Having to watch yoursons grow with the team is great, Russell started on JV and now his is on his last year of Varsity and Derek is on JV and he is improving every week. The parents for both teams are great too. We always look forward to the weekend and being at the games with everyone.The coaches we have really care about the kids, that’s what it’s all about.”

Washingtonville Ice Hockey Club is part of the Hudson Valley High School Ice Hockey Association, consisting of high school teams from Orange and Dutchess County. Its declaration of purpose provides its members will endeavor to provide for all young men and women of the Washingtonville, Warwick, and a few other surrounding communities the format and opportunity to learn and play ice hockey at various age and skill levels. Charter and Articles for the club were proposed and adopted on May 26, 1994.
