City of Newburgh’s New Manager says “My Heart is in Newburgh”

The City of Newburgh will have a new leader to start the New Year.  Joe Donat will take his place as Acting City Manager as Michael Ciaravino exits the post he has held for the past 5 years, to move to the Midwest.  Ciaravino is leaving at the end of this week. While the two have spent many hours planning for the transition, Ciaravino has offered his consulting services after he leaves to ensure a continuing smooth transition.

Joe Donat will take his seat at Newburgh’s top spot after taking a leave of absence from Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney’s office where he has been Chief of Staff.  While he spent his early years in Westchester, he told the Orange County Post today that “More recently my heart is in Newburgh.”  He said he has dealt with political and governmental issues all the way from Yonkers to Port Jervis, with a solid reputation of offering useful help, including a lot of expertise in writing and obtaining grants.  He added “Myself and the City Council have all come to terms with how to help in the transition.”  His prime objective is to assist in that transition, ensure that the best applicant is chosen over the next 3-6 months, but is not seeking the permanent City Manager position for himself.

Donat graduated from Providence College in Providence Rhode Island with a degree in Political Science and worked for some time with Representative Nita Lowey of New York’s 17th District.  He then spent the last six years working for Maloney’s office and worked his way up from Staff Assistant to Chief of Staff.

Aside from the herculean stack of challenging tasks he will face as City Manager,   Donat shared that he is 34 years old,  single, and plans to spend the holidays with his folks.  He’s an avid fisherman and outdoorsman and said he very much loves the beauty that the Hudson Valley has to offer.
