Girl Scout Gold Award
Morgan Hurst of Girl Scout Troop 56, was awarded the Girl Scout of America’s highest and most prestigious award, “The Gold Award.” Morgan is a senior at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie. She lives with her parents Carrie and Chris Hurst and siblings in Cornwall.
After getting her proposal approved by the Hudson Valley Girls Scout Council, and Father Maurer of Saint Mary’s Church in Washingtonville, she began the process of creating her (VBS) Vacation Bible School for the day. When school was closed for a holiday, Morgan had children from kindergarten to fourth grade come to the parish center class rooms at St. Mary’s to teach them about the stories from the Bible. This required many hours of preparation to develop lesson plans, crafts, stories, activities and fund raising.
Morgan worked closely with her adult Girl Scout advisors as well as other scouts, family, friends and the Washingtonville community. More than eighty hours went into documenting, organizing and supervising her project which allowed her to demonstrate her leadership abilities. She has made arrangements for her project to be carried on. She also shared her lesson plans with other churches in the area. Her program will be implemented at several of them.
At our Lady of Lourdes Morgan is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Principals Club, Varsity Soccer Team, Jane Austin Society, Newspaper and News and Views. She was awarded the Furman Award. She also received an Eddy Award for her photo essay for News and Views.
Morgan will be attending college in the fall and plans to major in chemistry.
