The Week In Review-The Weekend Ahead

John Spear CYO Night

John Spear CYO Night

On February 7th Washingtonville High School held a special night to recognize past and present players of the St Mary’s CYO program; and most importantly to honor John Spear who was a huge part of the program’s foundation and truly an iconic figure of the village of Washingtonville. A longtime CYO administrator and basketball coach John was honored with a ceremony held prior to the Girls’ Varsity basketball game versus Goshen.

Representing John’s past CYO teams varsity tri-captains: Victoria Pecovic, Jennifer Shute and Dyana Budakowski, presented John’s widow, Mary with flowers and a certificate. The certificate read in part “For the many years of dedicated service to the Washingtonville community and for giving of yourself to all those you have coached the Washingtonville Central School thanks you”.These three along with other current varsity players were members of John’s last eighth grade CYO travel team in 2015. They are just one example of the impact that John had on the youth of not only Washingtonville but the surrounding area with his commitment to the CYO program. Route 208 that runs through the heart of the village is appropriately named: John Spear Way. The many past and present CYO players that assembled on the high school gym floor are fitting examples of the influence of “the John Spear way”.
