Newburgh -Mount Saint Mary College honored 134 graduates of its prestigious Nursing program at a pinning ceremony on Friday, May 17. The nurse pinning has long been a prelude to the Mount’s annual Commencement ceremony. The next day, May 18, the college awarded degrees to 600 graduates, including the newly-minted nurses. Of the 600 graduates, the college awarded 120 master’s degrees and 480 bachelor’s degrees. Nearly 200 students earned degrees in Nursing and related fields, and another 138 earned degrees in Business  College President Dr. Jason Adsit congratulated the graduates and their families. “For unbelievable students like you, the world awaits,” said Dr. Adsit. “I am so proud of you. I am so happy for you. And you’re going to do great things. Congratulations, Class of 2019.”

The Class of 2019 was the first to graduate under Dr. Adsit, who began his tenure at the college in June 2018. It was also the first class to rally together under Dr. Adsit’s vision of the college’s future: a comprehensive, institution-wide commitment to service-learning and community engagement.

It was one of the largest Nursing classes the Mount has ever pinned, said Christine Berté, assistant professor of Nursing, director of the graduate Nursing program, and chairperson of the college’s School of Nursing. “The journey to become a registered, professional nurse is not an easy one,” explained Berté. “These students have just reached a milestone. They are now ready to make the transition from student nurse to graduate nurse.”

Nicholas Terzulli of Brooklyn, N.Y., who received the AMA NY Future Nurse Leader Award at the pinning, offered his reflections on the group’s journey from novices to graduates. He credited their professors with molding them into the knowledgeable and confident professionals they are today. “We have spent the last four years in pursuit of a common goal – being the best nurse we could be,” he said. “We must never forget the foundation that the Mount has given us.” He added, “During my time here, I’ve learned to look at each clinical, each person, and each day with optimism throughout the good and bad times. My fellow classmates…you have the ability to change lives.”
