NEWBURGH IS “ILLUMINATED” … BY FESTIVAL AND MORE!
There are several good reasons that Newburgh’s big festival of the year is called “Illuminated”, not the least of which is that it lights up Broadway, it lights up the eyes and smiles of the people there, and “Yes”, that’s not a typo… a crowd of about 40,000 was estimated to be there last weekend. But the historical reason it’s called “Illuminated”, which many do not know, is because Thomas Edison built the 2nd power plant ever in Newburgh, as well as the second city with electrical street lights. Chairman of Illuminated, Paul Ernenwein, Mayor Torrence Harvey, Senator James Skoufis and Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson greet the crowds. Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney was also present and spoke to the crowd.
