The Week In Review-The Weekend Ahead

They Fly Through The Air With The Greatest of Ease

Trapeze professionals

This was the week for one of Safe Harbor’s most popular activities, offering lessons on a flying trapeze.  It included a  “pop-up” flying trapeze academy on the Green at the corner of Broadway and Liberty Streets. Classes for the general public were offered for 10 days, and ended this Wednesday night.  One of the most iconic and spectacular of traditional circus acts, the Flying Trapeze was once reserved for the most elite acrobats …now, with a safety harness and net everyone had an opportunity to learn to fly, and under the guidance of experienced professionals.

Young beginners dared the heights, along with some slightly older adventurers, including the Newburgh City Council’s own Anthony Grice.

Councilman Grice, who, when not teaching at NFA,  is often seen out modeling fun and exciting growth activities for Newburgh’s teens and young adults emphasized “It’s important that we support family friendly events. It encourages the event organizers to come back and for others to seize the opportunity.”

Grice told the Orange County Post that:

“Flying on a trapeze was one of the scariest things I have ever done in my life. When I was young I fell off a two story roof. I was hospitalized for a week and on bed rest for a month. I always tell my children to be fearless and to be adventurous. Flying on a trapeze gave me the opportunity to practice what I preach. I definitely don’t regret it.”

All proceeds raised through flying trapeze classes will support the Safe Harbors Circus on the Green – A program of Ritz Kidz.

Safe Harbors has lots of other exciting events planned for this summer for both adults and kids, including: Outdoor Movies on Safe Harbors Green (August 1), the annual Ann Street Community Paint-In event (for all ages) on Saturday, August 10 from 11 am – 2 pm, an evening of music paying tribute to Woodstock, the famous three-day festival of Peace, Love and Music in upstate New York that defined an entire generation! (August 17, 7:30 pm to 10:00 at Safe Harbors Green), and a  night of dancing and fun at Salsa Under the Stars on Friday, August 23 at 7:30 p.m. also on Safe Harbors Green!
