Three Airlifted After High Speed Chase

Town of Newburgh – Late Thursday morning a black Tahoe SUV was stopped on the New York State Thruway for an outstanding BOLO (“Be On The Lookout”) regarding a felony.  The vehicle took off with police in hot pursuit to Exit 17 after which it struck another Chevy Tahoe head-on as well as several other passenger vehicles on Route 17K by the Hudson Valley Hotel.

The two Tahoe SUVs were smashed and twisted practically beyond recognition and required multiple efforts by Orange Lake Fire Department and Good Will Fire Departments along with EMS staff who faced a major challenge to extricate the four who had led them on the chase.  A landing site for rescue was set up for 2 helicopters  by Fire and EMS personnel.  Police at the scene of the crash had their guns drawn, but none of the crash victims was in any condition to protest being extricated from what could very easily have been a fatal scene.  Three of the injured were airlifted to Westchester Medical Center and one was brought to Montefiore St. Luke’s Hospital.   None of the injuries was considered to be life-threatening according to the latest State Police Report; however, one of the airlifted subjects was said to be in “serious condition”.

Other individuals at the scene also suffered some minor injuries with the total injured being 7.  Route 17K was closed down in the area of the accident between Routes 300 and 747. State Police are following up with investigation  on the initial BOLO request. Rescue personnel included State Police, Town of Newburgh Police, Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Orange Lake and Winona Lake Fire Departments and their EMT units.   (Photos by Bob McCormick and Vincent Dominick)
