Orange County 4-H Youth Advance to New York State Fair

By Edie Johnson

Area 4-H youth competitions are not for the faint of heart or lazy, or those just going to meetings for fun.  The level of 4-H work, learning, training, skill and cooperation needed to qualify for State Fair Finals is grueling but equally rewarding.  The youth come from all areas of Orange County; however, with the new expansive  Cornell  Education Center & 4-H Park in Otisville, numbers of participants are increasing from the western end of Orange County, and not as much here  in the eastern quarter.  Efforts are under way to change that and not only bring more youth to the Otisville Center, but  really ramp up a schedule of related activities in the greater Blooming Grove/Washingtonville Area.

The 4-H youth of Orange County surpassed the judge’s expectations during the first 4-H Fair & Family Festival held July 26, 27, & 28. Now the youth participants are on their way to the New York State Fair competitions!  Many different animal species, including Sheep, Dairy Cows, Dairy Goats, Dogs, Rabbits and Horses were shown over the course of the 3-day fair. All of the shows concluded with a Supreme Champion, which grants these particular youth to continue on to the New York State Fair to compete against other county champions.

Additionally, many other youth participated in other 4-H related activities including STEM, Home Arts and Fashion Review that will also make the venture to the New York State Fair. For a full list of the Festival winners see our online issue this week at

And look for events that local youth will be encouraged to participate in during the coming months.

During the county-level competitions, many of the resourceful judges provided positive feedback to youth on how to improve their skills for future competitions. The following 4-H youth of Orange County will make the voyage to the New York State Fair:
