By James McVey

The National Purple Heart Honor Mission is, as we go to press,  awarding U.S. Army General David Perkins (Ret.) and former U.S. Marine Corps Corporal Megan Leavey as the recipients of the 2019 Genesis Medal during the organization’s 3rd Annual Genesis Legacy Medal Dinner.

Anthony’s Pier 9 Restaurant was nearly filled to capacity for the dinner which gave the award to General Perkins who was commander of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine before his retirement.  Corporal Leavy was awarded the Purple Heart and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with a “V” device for heroism in combat and served as a Military Police K9 handler.

Also honored at the dinner were two Genesis members, Senator Bill Larkin, a WWII and Korean war veteran, and  Joe Farina, who was the radio operator for General Douglas MacArthur in WWII who passed away this year. Genesis members Lt. Gen. James Hughes USAF retired, and Publisher Everett Smith who were instrumental in developing the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor were present for the Ceremony.
