In time for Veteran’s Day, the village of Washingtonville has put up permanent commemorative and honorific military banners on the lampposts surrounding the parking lot by the Veterans’ Memorial Stones on West Main Street. Five of the banners represent the five branches of the armed forces — Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy. One extra banner represents Prisoners of War, while a second is in memory of our fallen heroes.
Village Historian Linda Standish, along with John Pimpiano, described the significance of the banners. Mayor Joe Bucco said, “Everyone knows someone or prays for someone to come home safe and sound from doing the job that we, all too often, take for granted.”
After the Pledge of Allegiance was said, Girl Scout troops 294 and 529 sang God Bless America.
