Not Just Man Suffers From Wars
Shoes From Millions Of Lost War Horses
Horse shoes of lost military horses found in the fields of Verdun in France have been placed on the gates as a grim artistic reminder of the millions of horses that lost their lives in the service of the wars of men. 7,000 horses died on the very first day of the Battle of Verdun, 1, 1916, WWI, and with little choice other than to serve their masters. Many were fitted with very large gas masks, as were their riders. Clearly the mask on the horse below leaves much to be desired.
