29 Firefighters and Police Officers in City of Newburgh Face Layoffs

As we went to press last night the elite police and firefighting units of the City of Newburgh heard through the grapevine that there might be  layoffs of over 30 members of their forces when the City’s budget is announced tonight. Word this morning was that the predictions were close to the sad reality, with 15 police officers and 14 firefighter in the layoff line.

Yesterday, protesters were requested by their unions to march both in the afternoon and evening, and a crowd came to voice their displeasure at the City Council Meeting, at one point requiring an attendee to be escorted from the premises.   In the past there have been last minute grant monies attained, and while some of the responders remain hopeful, others have already made arrangements to work elsewhere.
