Sojourner Truth Award Given in Washingtonville
More than 70 Washingtonville High School and Middle School students were recognized with Sojourner Truth Awards during a county-wide ceremony held at SUNY Orange on Friday, March 6. For the past 30 years, SUNY Orange has honored Sojourner Truth—the highly-regarded 19th century African-American woman who lived in the Mid-Hudson Valley region after escaping from slavery—by giving out awards in her name. It is a celebration of youth, accomplishment, and culture. At the ceremony, WHS Grade 10 student Jade Sampson was honored with a scholarship after being nominated by her teacher Kevin Calderin. In addition to the official event, WMS held a special event for the Middle School students during school hours to celebrate their continued hard work. Students were chosen by teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators because of the positive characteristics they portray at school.
