City of Newburgh Finds  Huge Cistern  Hole

Wondering what the Water & Engineering departments are up to? Last week during routine maintenance they identified a sinkhole forming on Liberty Street between Broadway and Ann. It was caused by a collapsing cistern which is an underground reservoir that, long ago, supplied the Fire Department with water. Staff found a reference to the cistern in an 1869 report published by our Water Department. Want to read the report? Find it on the City website:
